Ministry Spotlight: The Elders at Faith

“The saying is trustworthy: If anyone aspires to the office of overseer, he desires a noble task” (1 Timothy 3:1).

Have you ever wondered what an elder does? Maybe you’ve heard the word before but aren’t exactly sure how elders serve in the church. Elders have been a part of Faith Church since the very beginning and are integral to the ministry that happens here, so if you are interested in learning more about what elders do, how they are selected, or who can become one, read on!

What is the role of an elder?

Elders at Faith provide oversight and evaluation. Oversight ensures the ministry direction at Faith is consistent with our mission. Evaluation makes sure that individual areas of ministry are accomplishing their mission within the larger mission at Faith.

What are the qualifications for elders?
First Timothy and Titus are guiding lights for the qualifications of elders at Faith. There are many characteristics and qualities outlined in Scripture, but a few prominent qualifications are the following: they are to be above reproach, sober-minded, gentle, respectable, hospitable, and able to teach, and they are to have a good reputation, a healthy home life, and a mature faith.

What are some distinctive qualities of the elders at Faith?
Besides the general qualifications above, elders at Faith portray these qualities:
Clarity:  Elders need to have a clear understanding of their own gifts and Faith’s mission.
Courage: Because church leadership involves making complex decisions, elders must have courage to help navigate important issues.
Commitment: Elders are committed to Faith’s mission, staying connected in community and serving with their God-given gifts.

How long do elders serve?
Elders commit to a three-year term and can serve two terms back to back. After two terms, they must step away for at least one year before coming back to serve as an elder. Most of Faith’s elders serve two terms.

How often do elders meet?
Elders meet twice a month to pray, give oversight and evaluate ministry, and they meet once a quarter over breakfast to discuss a book they are reading on theology, leadership, or ministry philosophy. They also meet once a year with the Lead Ministry Team.

How are elders selected?
Starting in the late spring, the congregation submits the names of men they think would make a good elder. The current team of elders reviews these names and contacts those who meet the criteria for an interview. After the interviews are complete, final names are put on the ballot for a vote at Faith’s July congregational meeting.
