Early one morning this past week I sat down for coffee with one of the leaders of a mission trip that is currently on the ground in Asia.
Over a couple of mugs of freshly ground coffee, he outlined the steps he and the team will be taking in faith this week. Asia is roughly half-way around the world and a lifetime away from what our days look like here. The focus of these trips is on some of the darkest and hardest to reach areas in the world.
The team is arriving and acclimating to the time change today before starting their ministry focused on bringing the Gospel to children. Throughout the next few days, the team will meet with hundreds of students at a school, taking time to introduce them to the love of Jesus.
The best thing we as a church can do this week is to pray for the team while they are working. Pray for providence and safety and for the kids they will be interacting with.
Between sleep deprivation, taking in a new culture and being outnumbered by kids, patience and energy will be in short abundance, I’m sure. But that’s where our prayers and God’s provision come into play.
“Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me” (Matthew 25:40).
Our team and these children in Asia epitomize this verse. When we reach out to “the least of these”—children and families in remote, hard-to-reach places, for instance—we are serving Jesus. Let’s pray that God will provide strength, health, and effective communication for our team as they serve Jesus and that he will prepare the hearts of those they serve so that there may be a great harvest for his kingdom.
